Sliders The Dual-Dimension DVD (Seasons 1 and 2)

The Dual-Dimension Edition DVD Review

The Dual-Dimension Edition: The First & Second Seasons Region 1
Original Release Date: 8/3/04
4/5

The first thing to notice about this set is the metallic appearance of the box and how the discs appear to float out into the clear plastic. It’s a clever design appearance that stands out among the majority of other TV DVD sets. One of the problems however, is that the discs are placed in a thin piece of foam to give you this look. The idea of keeping your DVDs scratch free comes to mind. But remarkably I’ve had no problems of keeping them scratch free in this foam. If you feel like that’s too much of a chance you can always opt. and buy a better DVD case.

This set does have a DVD guide, but it’s glued to the back on the box and to beat it all the guide has the episodes in the order they were originally aired. This is quite troubling even though the FOX network did air them this way. Continuity plays a factor in watching them, that’s why Slidecage offers you a DVD Discography below, which is in accordance to the correct production order — the order they were meant to be watched.

One of the gems of this set is the “Pilot” audio commentary which offers some insights into the show. “The Making of Sliders” offers more insight too, but I really wish it was more than 14 minutes long. The video and audio is presented well but I will point out that the infamous “Sliders whisper” at the end of the theme song is left out in “The Weaker Sex”. The series is also known for using the “Sliders whisper” at commercial breaks and they’re all left out except for the ones in “El Sid”, which of course, makes no sense. The menus have episode summaries, subtitles, and scene selections. The main menu also contains some Sliders theme music with a short interval of collaborated video.

My only major complaints would be the cheap materials used to make the set and the lack of a broad range of extras. However, the extraordinary episodes of the first two seasons more than make-up the downsides I’ve mentioned. I highly recommend this set to all Sliders fans, even to the casual ones.

Highly recommended: Slidecage’s Dual-Dimension Edition Discography PDF. The Dual-Dimension Edition set organizes the episodes in the order of their original airing. This is the incorrect episode production order. By following the Slidecage DVD discography you will be watching the episodes in the order they were intended to be watched.

Sliders The Second Season DVD

The Second Season DVD Review

The Second Season Region 1
Release Date: 7/24/12
4/5

The Second Season DVD set is similar to the First Season set. This set is a re-release from the Dual-Dimension Edition (2004) which contained both the first and second seasons. A clear slim case is presented with the DVDs laying in round trays that fold. The artwork is a purple montage of the Sliders with a background of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.

There are four discs to this set which contain all 13 second season episodes. Subtitles, episode summaries and a synopsis of the series is included. The menu contains a short video of collaborated video from the series. The re-released bonus materials are located on disc four which is a photo gallery and a fourteen minute featurette with Jerry O’Connell, Cleavant Derricks, and co-creators/writers Tracy Tormé and Robert K. Weiss.

The cons of the set include the episodes being out of order. However, continuity doesn’t play a huge factor only if you start digging deep into a few story lines. So it’s not necessarily a big issue. If you’d like to watch them in the correct order just refer to the DVD Discography below. The episode photos displayed on the inside case contain a photo from the third season but you wouldn’t notice it unless you’re a diehard fan.

But the biggest flaw of all is that there is plenty of room on this set to provided more Sliders extras. Photos, videos, documents, and more… they’re out there to use but Universal Studios hasn’t gotten the hint yet. It’s something Sliders fans and DVD collectors highly desire.

Overall this set is certainly worth it compared to the Dual-Dimension set which sported discs setting in foam.
